Abbott is launching a new antiepileptic, Gabitril (tiagabine). It'll be used as add-on therapy to control partial seizures.
Gabitril is thought to work by blocking the reuptake of GABA...the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. The increased GABA levels "apply the brakes" to inhibit seizures.
Patients use different doses of Gabitril...depending on their other antiepileptic therapy.
